Powerful winds down wires, raise waves

Stiff winds stirred Lake Michigan on Saturday to the delight of surfers, but the gusts of 45 mph that kicked up 6-foot waves also shook trees to the ground and forced a medical helicopter to an alternative landing area.
Kirk Bierens and three of his friends were among a handful of surfers lining the Grand Haven lakeshore to take advantage of a wind advisory that lasted through Sunday.
"This is how we love it," said Bierens, a 32-year-old Grand Rapids man who is a youth pastor at Grace Fellowship in Plainfield Township. "You fight the wind, the... (more)

GRU natural gas bills to go down

Falling natural gas prices mean Gainesville Regional Utilities' natural gas customers could see their bills drop about $16.50 a month starting in October.
Lower prices for the fuel, which GRU uses in its generators, will also help offset a series of electrical rate increases for those who rely on the municipal utility for power.
Natural gas prices spiked as a result of last year's hurricane season, which interrupted production and depleted supplies, GRU Managing Utility Analyst Heidi Lannon said. Since then, natural gas production has resumed, mild... (more)

Truck purchases in Texas turn flat this year

By SHANNON BUGGS
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle
TRUCKS always sell well in Texas, but this summer they didn't sell as well as usual.
Texas still leads the nation in truck sales, and dealers say they are are doing better largely because energy companies are going strong, as are related construction and services businesses where pickups are a
must.
But when domestic truck sales in Texas, the No. 1 market for full-size pickups, are virtually flat compared with the previous year, as they were in June, July and August, the... (more)

South China's booming city Shenzhen has introduced video link-up technology that allows victims of crime to communicate face-to-face with police officers.
Two video annunciators -- electronic devices with built-in cameras linked to police monitoring centers -- have been installed on Dongmen Street, a pedestrianized area, China Daily reported Tuesday.
The annunciators are aimed at boosting the confidence of local residents and helping police pinpoint the exact location of a crime, it said.

BEIJING, Oct.5 --Chinese scientists are planning super-efficient nuclear reactors that can maximize uranium burn-up and minimize waste in the generation of electricity.
If the first experimental reactor, set to be in operation by 2010, is successfl, the technology could help relieve China's uranium supply problems as the country accelerates nuclear power plant construction.
China Academy of Atomic Science President Zhao Zhixiang said a team of scientists has already mapped a detailed plan to speed up research and utilization of the so-called next-generation fast reactors.
